Gull screeching contest comes to Weston-super-Mare

Do you think your seagull impression is screechy enough to win a competition?

The contestants at Weston-super-Mare's first ever gull screeching championship certainly thought theirs were.

The competition was judged by 11-year-old gull-screeching expert, Cooper. Aka "Seagull Boy".

Cooper became an overnight sensation when he won a European Championship last year for gull screeching.

He won the contest again this year too.

Cooper, who has short dark blond hair and wears a white T-shirt and part of a gull costume, smiles as he looks at one of two identical medals. The medals have a picture of a seagull on them, surrounded by gold stars on a blue background, and blue ribbons with the EU logo on them.Image source, Family photo

Cooper was the guest of honour for the event and judged two categories, one for under-12s and another for teenagers and adults.

"I like how people are trying to make the world a better world by screeching," he said.

While it might sound a bit funny, the competition was taken very seriously.

Some contestants were seen soothing their throats with lozenges to get the best sound.

The adult competition was won by Scott Milton and the junior category was won by three-year-old Myles.

Cooper said it was a bit scary picking the winner.

He said: "There were so many good people doing a really good noise, so it was very hard".
