Watch: Visitor sits on and breaks artwork chair in Italian museum

Oops! Have you ever accidently broken something? A smashed mug, a phone in the sink, a priceless museum art piece...? Well you're not alone.

A man visiting a museum in Verona, Italy, accidently broke an art piece by sitting on it.

The Palazzo Maffei museum in Verona has shared CCTV footage from April, which shows a man and woman taking pictures of each other pretending to sit on an art piece called the "Van Gogh" chair.

However, the man had a bit of a wobble and fell on the chair, crushing it underneath him.

The video then showed the couple swiftly leaving the museum, without telling anyone what had happened.

Officials at the museum say they have got in touch with the police about the pair - who have not yet been identified - and the art piece has since been repaired.

"Sometimes we lose our brains to take a picture, and we don't think about the consequences," said museum director Vanessa Carlon.

"Of course it was an accident, but these two people left without speaking to us - that isn't an accident," she added. "This is a nightmare for any museum.

"Art must be respected and loved because it is very fragile."

The art piece is a sparkly bejewelled chair that was built by Italian artist Nicola Bolla.

It's covered in lots of Swarovski crystals and is named after the famous artist Vincent van Gogh as a tribute to his painting of a simple chair.

Carlotta Menegazzo, an art historian based at the museum, says that - while it looks sturdy - the chair's frame is mostly hollow and is held together with foil.

"On the chair was a note warning people not to touch, and of course it is placed on a pedestal, so it's quite clear it's not a real chair," says Ms Menegazzo.

During the accident, the two front legs and base of the chair were broken, but Ms Menegazzo says "a great job" has been done to restore the piece and it is now back on display.
