In the first live episode of Strictly Come Dancing, Karen Carney, a former Lioness and football pundit, stunned judges with a jive, ending the night on a high.

Karen and her partner Carlos Gu topped the leader board with 31 points out of a possible 40.

Actor Lewis Cope and Katya Jones followed with 28 points.

Actor Amber Davies and Nikita Kuzmin tied third with former footballer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and his partner Lauren Oakley, with 27 points.

Amber Davies had a very limited time to rehearse after stepping in after Dani Dyer was forced to pull out.

Former sprinter Harry Aikines-Aryeetey and his partner Karen danced a cha-cha-cha.

The athlete best known as Nitro in Gladiators became emotional as he talked about becoming injured last year.

Finally, a change to the way the judging works was announced with judge Shirley Ballas no longer having the deciding vote on which couple stays in the competition.

Instead the power will alternate between the judges.
