'Never give up on your dreams' - Rory McIlroy wins Masters golf tournament

If you are a golf fan, the chances are you will have been glued to your screens watching all the action this weekend.

It was a big moment for Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy as he celebrated winning a really important trophy - let us bring you up to speed and explain why what happened was such a big deal.

There are four big tournaments in golf known as the majors, and one of those took place this weekend - The Masters.

It's very rare for someone to win all four of these tournaments in their career, but Rory McIlroy completed the achievement by winning the Masters on Sunday.

Sixth person to achieve career Grand Slam

Rory McIlroy beat England's Justin Rose to win the Masters title on Sunday in Augusta, in the state of Georgia in the United States.

To achieve a career Grand Slam in golf, you need to have won the US Open, The Open, US PGA Championships and The Masters.

Rory had won the other three titles by the end of 2014 but couldn't quite get his hands on this one until now.

He becomes the sixth man to achieve the Grand Slam, joining Americans Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods and South Africa's Gary Player.

After his winning moment, Rory's daughter was in the crowd as he gave a speech.

He said: "The one thing I would say to my daughter Poppy is never give up on your dreams. Keep coming back, keep working hard and if you put your mind to it, you can do anything."

McIlroy was born in Holywood in Northern Ireland in 1989.

As a child, he learned his golf on the hilly local course.

Rory first made headlines in Northern Ireland as a child when he went on local television and chipped golf balls into a washing machine.

Awarded an MBE in 2012

You might have heard of an OBE, MBE and CBE - these are special honours given to recognise people's achievements and service to the country.

They are handed out twice a year in the UK - once at New Year, and then again on the monarch's official birthday.

MBE stands for Member of the Order of the British Empire.

McIlroy was awarded one after winning the US Open at the age of 22.

Named Player of the Year three times

Rory McIlroy has been named the PGA Tour Player of the Year on three occasions.

It's called the Jack Nicklaus Award - named after one of the other five players to achieve a career Grand Slam.

The award is particularly special as it is voted for by other players.

Rory's interest in golf started when he was just a toddler, as he copied his father's swing with a plastic club.

His first big win came at the age of nine when he won the Under 10 World Championship in Doral in Florida.

But it wasn't until he turned 18 that he turned professional and decided to play golf as a career.
