Taylor Swift has become the biggest ever MTV Awards winner after scooping 7 of the top trophies at last night's sparkling ceremony.

The event, also known as the Video Music Awards (VMAs), took place in New York, US, and saw the Eras Tour star win video of the year for Fortnight - with the track crowned 'Song of Summer' and gaining best collaboration for her work with Post Malone.

Speaking after collecting her shiny astronaut-shaped VMA, Swift said: "This video seems very sad when you watch it, but it actually was the most fun video to make."

It was a big night for many other artists too, with Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Seventeen and Katy Perry getting their hands on a VMA.

Taylor Swift secured her spot at the top by receiving the best pop and best artist VMA, as well as technical awards in best direction and best editing.

At Chappell Roan's first VMAs, she took home the best new artist award, treating the crowd to a performance of her hit song Good Luck, Babe! in a full suit of armour.

Reading the acceptance speech from her diary, she told her fans: "Don't let anyone tell you that you can't be exactly who you want to be."

The record-breaking summer smash Espresso took singer Sabrina Carpenter to new heights, winning song of the year and being lifted up by astronauts during her performance.

South African star Tyla won best Afrobeats song for her break-out hit Water - but she used her speech to make an important point about the category.

"This is so special, but also bittersweet because there is a tendency to group all artists under Afrobeats," said the star, whose music is more closely related to Amapiano - a South African music genre.

"Even though Afrobeats has opened so many doors for us, African music is so diverse. It’s more than just Afrobeats."

"I come from South Africa, I represent my culture," she added.

Billie Eilish was also recognised for What Was I Made For?, the song she wrote for 2023's Barbie movie. The music video won the 'Video for Good' award, which is given to a video that has a strong social message.

K-pop boyband Seventeen won best group, with Lisa - a member of another massive South Korean group, Blackpink - awarded best K-pop for her song Rockstar.

Katy Perry was honoured with the Video Vanguard trophy, a lifetime achievement VMA, saying: "Thank you to MTV for believing in my weirdness from day one."

Who has won the most MTV Awards ever?

She's now overtaken Beyonce, who has a total of 27, including two that she won as part of band Destiny's Child.

It was also the third time in a row that Swift won video of the year, a fan-voted award that she took home in 2022 for All Too Well and in 2023 for Anti-Hero.
