Towns and cities around the world will encourage people to ditch the car for a day to mark World Car Free Day.

It takes place every year on September 22, and this year around 200 streets in London will close over the weekend.

City Hall says some of the roads will be transformed into spaces for children to play and for people to socialise.

There are over 40 million cars on UK roads and approximately 1.47 billion vehicles on Earth.

The people behind World Car Free Day say it is a chance to encourage people to give up their cars for a day and experience the environmental and health benefits of having fewer cars on the road.

The UK's Walking and cycling commissioner Will Norman said:

"World Car Free Day is an important moment to celebrate the progress we’ve made in building more liveable neigbourhoods, and embracing a different vision for our streets."
