What's it like working in Parliament?

Members of Parliament, or MPs, have jobs that affect people all across the UK.

There are a total of 650 MPs in Parliament, and they split their time between working in the areas they represent, called constituencies, and the UK Parliament in London.

MPs meet in the House of Commons, which is part of the Houses of Parliament in London.

In Parliament, MPs are able to bring up issues which are important to people living in their constituencies. They can hold the government to account by asking questions, attending debates, and also vote on new laws.

Lucy Powell is an MP, and she's also the leader of the House of Commons. She works to make sure Parliament is respected, that it operates effectively, and that MPs get their chance to question the government.

She met with students to answer their big questions on how Parliament works.
