Woody the detection dog helps to protect seabirds

Located off the coast of Northern Ireland, Rathlin Island is home to a huge variety of wildlife including seabirds like razorbills and puffins.

Thousands breed on the island every year, but attacks by ferrets and rats are a major threat to the seabirds.

A special project has been introduced to help protect the birds, and Woody the fox-red labrador is playing a major part.

The pup has been trained to detect droppings from the ferrets and rats to see if there are any signs they’re still in the area.

It’s hoped that in time, he’ll be able to prove they’ve gone from the island.
