Chris Jordan: Sussex all-rounder aims to stay grounded

Sussex all-rounder Chris Jordan hopes he can build on his six wicket haul on his debut for the county.

The 24-year-old, who joined from Surrey in December, took figures of 6-48 in the first innings against Yorkshire as Sussex comfortably won at Headingley.

He told BBC Sussex: "Everyone at the club has been very helpful in helping me settle and it has let me get on with my cricket.

"I just want to stay grounded and keep putting in good performances."

He added: "I came on first change and the first one [wicket] was a bit lucky but I am happy with it and the win.

"It was a decent debut with eight wickets [in the match]."

The figures are Jordan's best in the Championship and put him sixth on the all-time list of best bowling figures on debut for Sussex in either innings.

The Barbados-born player joined the Hove outfit on a two-year deal following five years at rivals Surrey and, after a frustrating time at the Oval, he hopes he can fulfil his potential at Sussex.

"I couldn't really see a much better place to come after having a chat with Robbo [Sussex cricket manager Mark Robinson] and Davo [coach Mark Davis]," Jordan said.

"It was pretty clear where I wanted to continue my cricket and development.

"It was a bit frustrating at Surrey with a lack of opportunities and me being an ambitious cricketer.

"I wanted to play a lot more first-team cricket and go on to play internationally.

"I like to see myself as an all-rounder and I'm working on my game to be one. Hopefully all goes well and my game can develop into what it needs to be.

"The transition has been easy.

"I am not a sure pick and need to fight for my place but I do see myself playing in all three formats."

After winning their opening game at Yorkshire, Jordan hopes the side can continue their strong form when they return to action against Surrey next Wednesday.

"We have been doing quite good things in pre-season so it is enjoyable for it all to come together," he said.

"It was a really good team performance and long may that continue.

"The way Chris Nash went out and batted [scoring 80 in the first innings] took the pressure off the rest of the line-up and people were able to go and express themselves.

"I took my six wickets in the first innings but Nashy had to go and bat on a tough wicket."
