Scott Elstone's maiden century ensured Derbyshire's rain-ruined match at Glamorgan ended in a draw.

Derbyshire began their second innings 102 ahead, following the home side's controversial declaration on day three, but were soon reduced to 32-2.

But skipper Wayne Madsen (72 not out) and Elstone's career best (103 not out) took them to 209-2, 311 runs ahead, when a draw was agreed.

Glamorgan's much-improved over-rate saw them avoid any points deduction.

With only 47.5 overs possible in the previous three days, a draw on the final day was inevitable especially when play did not start at the Swalec Stadium until 13:25 BST.

When the action did get underway, Derbyshire lost both openers inside 13 overs as Chesney Hughes was trapped lbw by a ball that kept low from Michael Hogan and Ben Slater was caught by Colin Ingram at short mid-wicket off Dean Cosker.

Scott Elstone milestone

The 24-year-old hit his first championship century, and his highest-ever score, in only his seventh first-class match.

The innings, off 131 balls, included eight fours and one six and beat his previous best of 63 scored against Gloucestershire last summer.

Nerves were steadied by an excellent stand of 168 by Madsen and Elstone, who struck an eighth four to reach his first ever century, before the captains shook hands on a draw just before 18:00 BST.

The build up to the final day was dominated by Glamorgan's decision the previous evening to declare their first innings at 103-4 as the visitors felt it cost them the chance to claim further bowling points.

Glamorgan, who were in danger of being docked three penalty points for their slow over rate in the first innings, denied the decision was against the spirit of the game.

They then rattled through 42 overs in the afternoon session to make sure they kept all their bonus points.

Glamorgan head coach Toby Radford:

"I'm a bit frustrated by the weather, we lost so much cricket.

"I thought after we bowled them out for 200 we'd have a really good chance of winning the game since they were slightly depleted in the batting lineup. But you need four days cricket to try to win these four day matches.

"I was a little bit surprised (about Derbyshire's grievance at Glamorgan's declaration), we genuinely felt it was our best way to win the game in good seam bowling conditions.

"We earned three bowling points through hard work in the first innings and the last thing you want to do is lose that, so I'm pleased we've taken those back and taken the draw points.

"We set out to get wins but you can't control the weather."

Derbyshire captain Wayne Madsen on Glamorgan's first-innings declaration:

"I thought it was about 60 per cent to help the over rate and 40 per cent to make a game of it.

"We might have done the same thing, but we are always conscious of watching our rate."
