Devon make Minor Counties Twenty20 finals tournament

Devon are the reigning Minor Counties one-day champions

Devon reached the finals of the first Minor Counties Twenty20 tournament after beating Cornwall by one run in the final of their qualifier.

Max Curtis hit 73 off 57 balls as Devon made 152-7 in the final at Exmouth.

In reply, Ben Green and Charlie Miles each took three wickets as Cornwall were 151 all out with two balls left.

"We're chuffed to bits that we've come out on the right side of it, but it could have gone either way," said Devon director of cricket Keith Donohue.

"It was a very good innings from Max. The wicket was probably a bit tougher, so for him to bat like he did, and with the composure he did, said volumes about his quality, it was a top knock," he told BBC Sport.

In the semi-finals, Rob Woodman hit 97 in Devon's 78-run win over Wiltshire, while Cornwall beat Dorset by four wickets as Matthew Robins took 3-15.

The finals tournament is in Banbury next month, with Devon hoping to make amends having missed out on retaining their Minor Counties one-day title after failing to qualify for the knockout stages.

"Both the teams we beat were the teams we lost to in the one-day format, but I think getting through gives us that bit of impetus, especially for the younger players the team, that you can achieve things if you play well enough, and we certainly played well," Donohue added.
