World champion Adrian Lewis into last 16 of Grand Slam

Lewis will defend his world title at the Alexandra Palace in December

PDC world champion Adrian Lewis has booked his place in the last 16 of the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton.

The 26-year-old from Stoke-on-Trent averaged 109.39 in his 5-1 victory over Co Stompe to maintain his 100% start.

Three-time Grand Slam winner Phil Taylor is also on the brink of qualification for the knockout stages after a 5-3 win against Steve Beaton.

Taylor has won his opening two group matches but still needs to beat Mervyn King to guarantee a last 16 spot.

The 15-time world champion was pleased to avenge his quarter-final defeat to Beaton in 2010.

"Steve's a great player and he really pushed me again tonight," said Taylor. "He beat me here last year so I knew I had to be on my game to get the result.

"It's in my hands now to get through to the last 16 and I know I'll have a tough game on my hands on Wednesday against Mervyn."

The 16 players in Groups A-D play their final group matches on Tuesday evening, with only Dean Winstanley and Mark Walsh certain to appear in the second round.

Stoke duo Ian White and Ted Hankey do battle, with the winner progressing from Group B to the knockout stages alongside Lakeside runner-up Winstanley.

White, who was originally a reserve for the tournament but was awarded a place because of an injury to Simon Whitlock, told BBC Radio Stoke: "It's going to be amazing (if I can win).

"I've been waking up, going back to sleep, waking up, going back to sleep, and that's just about trying to get into the next round. How I would feel if I got through to a final? I don't know.

"I'm hoping to get the crowd behind me, play quite well and hopefully hit that last double again."
