Nick Powell's second goal in two games was enough for Crewe to beat Hereford.
The 17-year-old's sweet 25-yard strike came after he had seen three spectacular efforts go close to breaking the deadlock.
AJ Leitch-Smith also clipped the bar for a Crewe side who made it two wins from two for new manager Steve Davis.
Tom Barkhuizen had the Bulls' best chances but blazed a volley over and failed to beat Steve Phillips with a header from point-blank range.

Crewe manager Steve Davis told BBC Radio Stoke:
Davis happy with terrific defence
"That was a good three points, and it's really important at this stage that we just keep winning games.
"Nick's a special player, he's been producing those kind of things in training and he's starting to show it on the pitch now.
"Our defending was terrific at times, blocking things but we were riding our luck at times as well."
Hereford manager Jamie Pitman told BBC Hereford & Worcester:

"We've had a number of opportunities and ricochets. We've got to make more of those opportunities.
"It was a fine strike. He had a bit too much room but sometimes you have to take your hat off and say it was a great strike.
"I think it would've been a world class save if he (David Cornell, the Hereford goalkeeper) had got it, but it was just the pace and the movement."
