Jim Goodwin banned for throwing punch at Steve Jennings

St Mirren captain Jim Goodwin has accepted a two-match ban for throwing a punch at Motherwell's Steve Jennings at Fir Park on Saturday.

And the Irishman will serve a further one game suspension, having reached six yellow cards for the season.

A club statement said that Goodwin "accepts that he has let the club, his team-mates and the supporters down by his actions".

Goodwin will miss games against Rangers and Dundee United and Kilmarnock.

Jennings has also been served with a notice of complaint by the Scottish Football Association for his role in the altercation.

And Motherwell have until 1500 GMT on Wednesday to respond to the proposed two-match suspension.

Television pictures show what looks like an uppercut from Goodwin into the stomach of Jennings following a foul by the Englishman.

Both players were booked by referee Calum Murray following the incident.

Goodwin, who went on to score St Mirren's equaliser in a 1-1 draw, appears to have been shown his yellow card for either dissent or an earlier push in Jennings' back after the Motherwell player's scything tackle on Kenny McLean in the 11th minute.

Referee Murray's view of the punch may have been obscured by Jennings' body.

The Motherwell man raised his hand towards the face of Goodwin before the Buddies skipper retaliated.

Should the Fir Park club contest the proposed ban, a fast track tribunal will adjudicate on the matter on Thursday.
