Morecambe 1-0 Southend

Teenage striker Jordan Burrow's first league goal gave Morecambe victory over high-flying Southend.

The 19-year-old bundled the ball home from close range from Lewis Alessandra's left-wing free-kick to end a run of two successive draws.

Southend, who have never beaten Morecambe, went close through Bilel Mohsni but his looping header hit the top of the bar.

Anthony Grant missed a chance to level in injury time but shot wide.

The defeat was Southend's second in a week following the midweek reverse at Aldershot.

VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM

Southend United manager Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex:

Southend gave 100% - Sturrock

"The conditions, with the wind and the bobbly pitch, were always going to make it difficult to be free-flowing.

"The first goal was always going to be key, we had two or three half chances just before they scored.

"The players gave 100 per cent. I don't think you could point the finger at their attitutde and their work-rate.

"Some of them didn't perform to the standards they can achieve, but I would not in any way point the finger at individuals today."
