Sheffield United boss Danny Wilson admitted financial reasons were behind the absence of Nick Montgomery and Richard Cresswell for Tuesday's draw with Coventry.

The Blades drew 1-1 at the Ricoh Arena but the experienced duo were not even included on the bench.

"They were both fit, they were left out for financial reasons," he told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"They're top lads but it's a decision that's had to be made."

He added: "We've not had any interest in them at the moment but obviously the window is open until the end of the month.

"The position the club is in isn't easy and we've had to make the decision to nurture the young players."

The Blades narrowly missed out on promotion to the Championship last campaign, losing to Huddersfield in the League One play-off final.

Following the defeat chairman Kevin McCabe revealed the club would have to cut their budget for this season.
