Ebbsfleet Utd 1-1 Grimsby

  • Published

Grimsby missed the chance to return to the top of the Blue Square Bet Premier as they could only draw with Ebbsfleet.

After the Mariners' promotion rivals Newport won earlier in the afternoon, Grimsby went ahead through Marcus Marshall's sublime curling effort.

But the hosts levelled when Tom Phipp passed to Matt Godden, who fired in his second goal for the Fleet.

Grimsby could have won it, but Michael Rankine shot wide to leave his side two points behind first-placed Newport.

Ebbsfleet manager Liam Daish told BBC Radio Kent:

Daish - that's a very good point

"The lads showed a lot of character, we didn't lose our shape or discipline, we created chances and I'm pleased to see Matt Godden score.

"It was a hard game against the league leaders. They've got some good players and that's a good point and we're pleased.

"The two centre-halves were magnificent. It was well deserved. The run continues, which is good."

Grimsby joint-boss Rob Scott told BBC Radio Humberside:

"It looked like two games within one really. I thought we started the game poorly, we put ourselves under massive pressure from what was our kick-off.

"When all is said and done it was probably a fair result and a good point on the road which we may look back on and think it was a good point. Although we feel we could have done enough to get three if we carried on playing as we did in the first-half."
