Wigan Athletic have signed England international goalkeeper Scott Carson from Bursaspor for an undisclosed fee.

The 27-year-old returns to English football after two years in Turkey.

Carson, who won the last of his four England caps in 2011, has played in the Premier League for five different clubs including Liverpool and Aston Villa.

He will compete with Ali Al-Habsi and Mike Pollitt for the number one jersey after signing a three-year contract with the FA Cup holders.

Carson has won promotion to the top flight before, during a three-year spell at West Bromwich Albion.

He is Wigan manager Owen Coyle's fifth summer signing, joining Chris McCann, Stephen Crainey, Thomas Rogne and James Perch at the DW Stadium.

"Coming into a squad with a new look to it is exciting," Carson told the club website., external

"There are plenty of players coming in at the moment, but there are also a number of guys here who have been at the club for a long time. I'm sure they'll help lads like myself settle in, and right now I can't wait to start getting involved.

"Everyone talks about how tough the league is and they're right. You have to be at your best if you're going to come out on top and, with a lot of games to play, it's going to be really demanding on us this year."
