Torquay 1-1 AFC Wimbledon

Defender Aaron Downes scored a superb stoppage-time equaliser as Torquay salvaged a draw against AFC Wimbledon.

Torquay's on-loan Derby striker Callum Ball came close to breaking the deadlock with a superb 25-yard effort that struck the outside of the post.

Downes had deflected Harry Pell's shot past his own goalkeeper Martin Rice as Wimbledon took an 87th-minute lead.

But Torquay were not to be denied and Downes glanced a deft downward header past keeper Ross Worner to level.

Torquay United boss Alan Knill told BBC Radio Devon:

"We knew it was going to be a real tough game. We had to compete with them today but we know we're going to get better.

"When you bring in half your team two weeks before the start it's difficult to do all the things you want to do.

"We were unfortunate to go behind to a deflection but we showed courage to go forward and we'll take a point. It was so important not to lose today."

AFC Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley told BBC London 94.9:

"It was open at times and an exciting game to watch, and some positives to take from the match.

"We created good chances but we didn't pass it as well as pre-season due to the nerves, but overall reasonably solid defensively and created some nice stuff going forward.

"It's to be expected that players are worried about making mistakes but last season it was more about survival and this season we are going to encourage them to make positive decisions.

"It's going to be a season where we use the full squad, I don't know my best team and I will look to keep things fresh and give everyone a chance."
