Exeter City captain Danny Coles is facing disciplinary action after sending an offensive message to a supporter on Twitter.

The 32-year-old responded to a tweet with a number of expletives following England's World Cup defeat by Uruguay.

Exeter have apologised on behalf of Coles, who has been at City since 2011.

"The matter will be addressed internally and the club will be making no further comment," the club said in a statement on their website., external

Coles tweeted "[England defender Phil] Jagielka is a car crash waiting to happen" during the match, to which a fan replied "so like you for Exeter".

It was in response to that remark that Coles used offensive language.

The former Bristol Rovers defender signed a new contract in October 2012 which is believed to run until 2015.

Coles hit the headlines in 2012 when he broke his neck in a freak training ground accident.
