Shrewsbury: Goldson ignored agent's advice to sign new deal

Goldson has made 66 appearances for Shrewsbury since his debut in February 2011

Shrewsbury Town defender Connor Goldson says he defied the wishes of his agent to stay with the League Two club rather than join a higher-profile side.

Goldson, 21, is a product of the Shrews' youth academy and signed a new two-year contract on 4 July.

"My agent didn't really want me to sign," Goldson told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"He wanted me to go and play under-21 football at a Premier League team but it's better I stay here."

Goldson had been linked with a move into the youth set-up at Swansea City and although he admits he was excited by the idea, Goldson is sure staying where he is the right move for now having spoken to his father and Shrews boss Mickey Mellon.

"As soon as I came off the phone to the gaffer I said to my dad 'I'm signing'," he said.

"I was buzzing just being associated with big teams but when I looked at the big picture it's better I stay and play games and hopefully, then, you earn yourself a move.

"I don't want to go to a team and not play football. I want to stay here and play every week.

"It's fake to go and play under-21 football somewhere else, I need to be playing in the first team every week and there's no other place I'd rather do that than here."

Mellon has been busy rebuilding his squad for the new season following the Shrews' relegation from League One in 2013-14, with 12 players arriving so far this summer.

And Goldson is determined play his part in putting the club back in the division as soon as possible.

"Last year was my worse year in football - I hated every minute of getting relegated," he said.

"The gaffer's so infectious. He demands the highest standards and I like that.

"I want to be the best I can be and my main aim is to get this team back into League One."
