Kit Symons: Fulham caretaker hopes to get job permanently

Former Wales international Symons made 129 appearances for Fulham between 1998 and 2001

Fulham caretaker manager Kit Symons thinks their League Cup win over Doncaster will "certainly help" his bid to be appointed permanently.

Whites chairman Shahid Khan said he would lead a "thorough search" for a new boss after sacking Felix Magath.

Symons told BBC London 94.9: "I spoke with the owner the other day and he was brilliant and very supportive.

"I know there will be a search for the right man and they will not leave any stone unturned to find him."

He added: "I just hope that person is me."

German Magath was sacked last week after their poor start to the Championship season, which had seen the west London club pick up just one point from their first seven league games of the season.

Symons spent three years with Fulham during his playing days and has previously scouted for the club and had spells in charge of their under-18 and under-21 sides.

On his appointment as caretaker, the former Wales international said "no-one understands the fabric of this club better than me".

He lost his first game in charge on Saturday, seeing his side beaten 1-0 by Blackburn after going down to 10 men following the sending-off of defender Shaun Hutchinson.

However, the 2-1 victory over League One Doncaster on Tuesday gave him his first win - and secured Fulham's first home victory since they beat Norwich in the Premier League in April.

"These fans are fantastic and they need and deserve something to cheer about," said the 43-year-old.

"It is a small start but I intend, along with the players and the staff, to build on this now and move on from here.

"All I can say is that whoever gets the job, the club and the team will be in a good state when they take over.

"There is a lot of work to do with them but I am loving every minute of this job."

Magath was fired by Fulham last Thursday after winning just four of his 20 games in charge

Meanwhile, Symons says Fulham's players and staff have reacted positively following Magath's dismissal.

"Certainly the mood around the training ground has been brilliant in the last few days," he said. "It has been a really good atmosphere for everyone and people have got smiles on their faces.

"That is how it should be and what Fulham has always been like whether you are a player or a member of staff. It is a fantastic football club and people should be happy to work there."
