Blyth Spartans 4-1 Altrincham

  • Published

Northern Premier League Blyth Spartans pulled off an FA Cup first round shock as they confidently beat Conference Premier side Altrincham.

Blyth took the lead on four minutes when Shaun Densmore brought down Robbie Dale who converted from the spot.

They went two up after the break when Dan Maguire cleverly linked up with Matthew Wade to coolly slot home.

Kyle Perry's lob put Altrincham back in it but goals from Dale and Maguire put comfortably put Blyth through.

Blyth Spartans - from the seventh tier - have now made it through to the FA Cup second round for the first time since the 2008/2009 season, when they beat AFC Bournemouth over two legs before falling in the third round to Blackburn Rovers.

Dale keeps FA Cup run going

Blyth Spartans striker Robbie Dale maintained his record of scoring in every round of this season's FA Cup.

The hosts looked the more confident right from the start and looked good for their lead in the first half after Dale's penalty.

Tom Marshall was unfortunate not to put the Conference strugglers level on half-time but his long range shot hit the post.

Maguire's intelligent finish doubled the hosts' lead but Altrincham kept the pressure midway through the second half and were rewarded when Perry latched onto Jake Moult's long ball.

Blyth went back on the attack and were unfortunate not to be out of sight when Stuart Coburn impressively denied Jarrett Rivers' shot.

Dale nabbed a second soon after when he rounded past Robins' Gianluca Havern to put restore their two-goal advantage.

But Maguire made sure of victory when he ran straight through the Altrincham defence to beat the advancing Coburn.
