Cardiff City head coach Paul Trollope has been appointed Wales national team coach.

Trollope replaces Fulham manager Kit Symons in the role who stepped down to concentrate on his role as Cottagers boss.

The 43-year-old, who joined Cardiff in February, will carry out his Wales role on a part-time basis.

Osian Roberts has been promoted to assistant manager to Chris Coleman.

Former Wales midfielder Trollope, previously managed Bristol Rovers and was also first-team coach at Birmingham City and Norwich City.

During five years as manager of Bristol Rovers, he guided the club to promotion to League One in 2007.

As a player he played with Wales manager Coleman, who is delighted to have him on board.

"On both a personal and professional level, we are very sad to lose Kit, but I fully understand the reasons behind his decision and wish him the very best of luck at Fulham," said Coleman.

"I am however, delighted to welcome on board another former team-mate of mine, Paul Trollope, who is a young and highly thought of coach.

"Paul will be a great team member and will fit in perfectly with the staff."

Bluebirds chief executive Ken Choo says Trollope has their backing to take on the extra workload.

"As a club we are proud and pleased to see Paul recognised by the FAW," said Choo.

"Whilst his primary focus remains on the task at hand here at Cardiff City, we are happy for the national side to use Paul's talent to their benefit, at agreed junctures, as they pursue a place in the European Championships.

"It goes without saying that they have our full backing during this exciting time."
