Josh Carson hit a penalty shootout winner to take York City through to the second round of the League Cup at the expense of Bradford City.

The Bantams led through a Christopher Routis volley, but York levelled when Luke Summerfield scored from the spot.

Alan Sheehan missed a 70th-minute penalty for Bradford, who then trailed to a brilliant James Berrett free-kick.

James Hanson's low drive made it 2-2 in injury-time but, after extra-time, Carson's penalty won it for York.

The Minstermen's Keith Lowe, Berrett and Reece Thompson also converted, while home keeper Scott Flinders saved from Routis and Tony McMahon.

Hanson and Josh Morris did net for the visitors, but their hopes were ended by Carson's composure.

York City manager Russ Wilcox told BBC Radio York:

Wilcox on York v Bradford City

"It was a game that had everything. Emotional highs and lows.

"They equalised 15 seconds before the end and then we showed bravery.

"We held firm and it's nice to win a penalty shootout.

"It's even more important because it gets us into the next round. It generates a little bit of cash for the football club and hopefully gets us a big tie."
