Jacob Butterfield: Derby midfielder embraces 'big step up'

Midfielder Jacob Butterfield says he is relishing the 'step up' in quality since joining Derby County in August.

Butterfield, who signed from Huddersfield Town, scored his first goal - a trademark long-range strike - in Saturday's 3-0 win over Rotherham.

"The style of play is different," the 25-year-old told BBC Radio Derby. "It's less direct.

"We are building it up, moving it around the pitch and switching play which suits me down to the ground."

The Rams are at home against QPR on Tuesday. They are fifth in the Championship table following a nine-game unbeaten run - which has included seven wins - but could go top of the division on goal difference if they win and other results go their way.

Butterfield, who has made eight appearances for his new club and is yet to finish on the losing side, said he was enjoying the type of "possession football" under head coach Paul Clement.

"There is more patient build up," he added. "It's a good step up in class coming here.

"I like to be on the ball, linking the play, getting around the box, playing one-twos and shooting so the style is perfect for me. And I am really enjoying it."
