World number one Rory McIlroy shot a two-under-par 70 to lie five shots off the lead after the first round of the Wells Fargo Championship.

McIlroy, 26, carded six birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey at Quail Hollow, North Carolina.

USA's Robert Streb fired a seven-under 65 and leads by one from compatriots Patrick Reed and Kevin Chappell.

"I was a little bit disappointed with how it finished but it's a solid opening day." McIlroy told Sky Sports.

The Northern Irishman was four under with two to play but found water from the tee at the par-three 17th.

His shot from the drop zone went within eight feet of the hole but he missed his putt to drop two shots.

He also found rough from the tee at the 18th and then a greenside bunker but managed to salvage a par.

McIlroy is seeking his 11th PGA Tour title at the scene of his maiden victory on United States soil in 2010.

Scotland's Russell Knox produced a bogey-free 69 to stand three under while Ireland's three-time major champion Padraig Harrington is two under.

Former US Open winner Webb Simpson and 2009 Open champion Stewart Cink are among six players on five under.

Defending champion JB Holmes managed a three-under 69.
