Tony McCoy has been released from hospital after breaking several ribs in a race in Taunton on Friday.

The 16-time champion jockey was riding Laudatory in the Steve Logan Memorial County Contractors Handicap Hurdle.

"At long last I've got out of hospital. I have broken a few ribs," tweeted McCoy, external, who believes the injury will stop him reaching his target of 300 winners this season.

"I am kinda sore but I will hopefully be back racing very soon."

McCoy fell at the final fence and needed oxygen to help his breathing.

He was taken to Musgrove Park Hospital for tests and released 48 hours later.

The 37-year-old's personal assistant said: "He spent last night [Saturday] in hospital and had tests done which confirmed the broken ribs and also bruising on the lungs.

"Even by his standards he will have a quiet week and won't be riding, and he'll go and see the doctor again next week."

McCoy gave up his final ride of the day at Taunton, Hopeful Start, in the totetrifecta Handicap Chase.

He had been booked to ride four races at Warwick on Saturday.

McCoy is on course to win his 17th title, leading the championship with 174 victories this season.
