British MotoGP: Jorge Lorenzo wins at Silverstone

Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo took a dominant British MotoGP victory at Silverstone to extend his lead at the top of the riders' standings.

The Spaniard started fourth but fought through the field before taking the lead from Casey Stoner at half-way.

Reigning champion Stoner came second, ahead of Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa.

Britain's Cal Crutchlow, who missed qualifying after a crash, produced a stunning recovery drive to finish sixth despite racing with a broken ankle.

Pole-sitter Alvaro Bautista and Yamaha's Ben Spies completed the top five with nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi a distant ninth.

The British crowd received a boost when the track's medical doctors passed Crutchlow fit to race after his crash in final practice on Saturday.

The 26-year-old, who started 20th and last, rode through the pain of his broken and dislocated ankle to make nine places after just two laps.

Further moves on Rossi, Hector Barbera, Stefan Bradl and a last lap move on Ducati's Nicky Hayden lifted the Briton into a brilliant sixth.

Crutchlow told BBC Sport: "I'm a little bit emotional, it was a tough weekend. Missing two hours of track time is a disaster but we did a good job.

"They told me I wasn't allowed to ride at the hospital [on Saturday]. I lied a little bit when I got to the circuit.

"The medical staff did a great job getting me fit for this race. It's a shame what happened because we could have been on the podium."

The ominous clouds which hovered over Silverstone during Sunday morning failed to deliver rain for the race as Bautista started on pole for the first time.

However, it was American Spies who made the better start, taking the lead into the first corner, with Stoner slotting into second and Bautista third.

Lorenzo dropped a place to fifth, but started to find some pace as the harder tyre came to life.

The Spaniard passed Hayden and then put a supreme move on Bautista around the outside of Luffield corner.

Lorenzo passed his Yamaha team-mate Spies later that same lap and then set off in pursuit of Stoner.

The Honda rider was struggling a lot with the new front tyre which was introduced at this weekend.

Four laps later, the Spaniard caught him and went through a sequence of corners trading the lead with some sensational overtaking moves.

Eventually, it was Lorenzo who made it stick and proceeded to pull out a gap, finishing an impressive 3.3 seconds clear of his main title rival.

Lorenzo told BBC Sport: "I enjoyed the race, but there was also a lot of tension because I was fifth at the start and I didn't want to make mistakes.

"I had some very nice laps fighting with Casey, I enjoyed this a lot. This victory is fantastic. This season, we are doing perfect, I could not ask for more."

Stoner added: "From lap one, following behind Ben [Spies], I saw how planted the Yamaha was. I was afraid at that point in the race.

"We weren't feeling good in qualifying and that didn't improve in warm-up. We had a few more problems and struggled for the whole race.

"We had a small battle with Jorge, but just didn't have the pace."

Lorenzo now leads Stoner by 25 points - a race win - on 140 with Pedrosa a further 14 behind.

Crutchlow has moved up to fourth in the standings on 66, six clear of his Tech 3 Yamaha team-mate Andrea Dovizioso.

The Italian was running well in fifth, but his race all but ended when a part of the bike came loose on his handlebar and he was forced into the pits.

Hayden finished seventh ahead of Bradl, Rossi and Barbera. Britain's other rider James Ellison finished 14th.

Britain's Scott Redding gave the British fans even more to cheer about with a gritty ride to second in the Moto2 race.

The 19-year-old spent the closing stages of the race battling with Spaniard Marc Marquez, but made his move on the final lap and defended robustly to secure his best result of the season.

Pol Espargaro took victory with third-placed Marquez taking the lead of the championship, while Britain's Bradley Smith came seventh on his Tech 3.
