Super League: Huddersfield Giants 12-18 Salford Red Devils

Josh Griffin has now scored five tries and kicked 23 goals in Super League this season

Former Huddersfield centre Josh Griffin scored a try and kicked three goals as Salford kept their heads to earn a first away win of the season.

Griffin set his side on course to win midway through the first half, improving his own try before Ben Jones-Bishop added another for a 10-0 lead.

Jack Hughes responded before the break, Danny Brough adding the extras.

Carl Forster scored to restore the 10-point lead, then Aaron Murphy replied but Griffin's penalty sealed it.

Griffin's precious two-pointer came in the 76th minute, just four minutes after Brough had kicked the conversion to add to Murphy's try.

Salford climb to fourth, the highest they have ever been in Super League, ahead of Monday's home game with neighbours Wigan, who are now third.

Huddersfield, who started the day in third, drop two places to fifth, after their first defeat in five matches, but their second on their own ground already this season.

The game was twice delayed early on when both Salford full-back Kevin Locke, with concussion, and Huddersfield lock forward Brett Ferres were carried off injured.

Huddersfield coach Paul Anderson:

"We made a very good team look very poor - and that's ourselves.

"We came up with some really simple, poor errors. We needed handles on the ball to be able to catch and carry it.

"The tale of our season so far is that we make things too hard for ourselves. But well done to Salford - they threw the kitchen sink at us."

Salford coach Iestyn Harris:

"If you're not prepared to defend like your life depends on it then you'll never win anything.

"It was nice to see us do well at that, given that we conceded far too many points in the early part of the season. We weren't flash with the ball but we did the basics right.

""We're starting to build some momentum now but it'll be a mental challenge for us to back this up against Wigan on Monday."
