Harvey Biljon's side failed to score after half-time as Carnegie battled back to win

Yorkshire Carnegie came from 13 points down to begin the new Championship campaign with a 39-22 win over Jersey at Headingley.

Tries from Nick Haining, Jack Moates and James Freeman gave the islanders a 19-6 lead.

Charlie Beech's score just before half time though kept the hosts in touch.

Chris Walker (2), Mike Myerscough and debutant Tom Ryder all crashed over in the second-half as Carnegie grabbed a bonus-point victory.

Analysis: Ian Randall, BBC Radio Jersey

"Jersey did really well for an hour but perhaps the difference was the impact from the bench of the home forwards. I think it's a harsh margin for Jersey to come out 17 points on the wrong side of Yorkshire Carnegie."

Jersey had been searching for their first opening-weekend win at Championship level and were targeting a first ever success at Headingley.

Back-row Haining powered over for the opening try, before Carnegie were reduced to 14 men with lock Dean Schofield shown yellow amid a series of Yorkshire infringements.

Scrum-half Moates and flanker Freeman - both making their competitive debuts for the club - claimed tries while the islanders had the man advantage.

At the other end prop Beech got the home side's first try of the new season but Brendan Cope's penalty meant Jersey were 22-13 ahead at half-time.

It was the Leeds-based outfit that did all the scoring after the break though, with the visitors left pointless in the second period.

Walker crashed over for a converted try just before the hour mark to narrow the gap to 22-20, before Myerscough scored with Jersey replacement forward Gary Graham in the sin bin to put Carnegie in front.

Walker's second score, in the corner from a maul, secured the bonus point and at the same time took the losing bonus point away from the Channel Islands side.

Ryder's late try completed a much more ruthless second-half display from the hosts, with Jersey left with nothing to show for their first half performance.
