- Published
British number three Johanna Konta is through to the second round of qualifying for the French Open.
The 22-year-old world number 168 beat China's Saisai Zheng, ranked 12 places below her, 6-1 6-3 in Paris.
Anne Keothavong's chances of competing in the main draw are over though as she lost to Eva Birnerova of the Czech Republic in the qualifying first round.
Keothavong, ranked 190, won the first set but could not push on and lost 3-6 6-3 6-0 to the world number 152.
The British number five Tara Moore is also out after a 6-3 6-3 defeat by the number seven seed for qualifying, Sesil Karatantcheva of Kazakhstan.
Players have to win three qualifying matches this week to make it into the first round which begins on Sunday.
Konta, who made her Fed Cup singles debut for Great Britain in April, is looking to reach the main draw at Roland Garros for the first time where she would join fellow Brits Laura Robson, Heather Watson and Elena Baltacha.
Baltacha is currently ranked 234 in the world following nine months out of the sport with an ankle injury, but she is able to play in the French Open as a result of her protected pre-injury world ranking of 103.
She made a winning return to the WTA tour at the Brussels Open on Monday.
However, she lost in the second round to the number seven seed Varvara Lepchenko on Wednesday. The American won comfortably in straight sets, 6-2 6-0.
