Britain's Johanna Konta beat world number 34 Zarina Diyas in straight sets in the first round of the Aegon International in Eastbourne.

Konta, 24, ranked 105 places lower than her opponent, won 6-3 6-2 against the 21-year-old Kazakh.

Fellow Briton Naomi Broady came close to upsetting Sloane Stephens, losing to the American in a final-set tie-break.

Stephens, ranked 42nd and 116 places higher than 25-year-old Broady, was a 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7-4) winner.

British number one Heather Watson begins her Eastbourne campaign against American Varvara Lepchenko on Centre Court on Monday, while 18-year-old Londoner Harriet Dart takes on Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova.

All 16 seeds have received a bye to the second round, with last year's Wimbledon runner-up Eugenie Bouchard of Canada the most high profile name in action on day two, as she faces American Alison Riske.
