Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been praised for condemning a fan who disrupted a minute's silence for the victims of the Paris terror attack with an anti-Muslim heckle.

The incident occurred before the Packers' 18-16 defeat by the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

"I was very disappointed with the fan who made a comment I thought was really inappropriate," Rodgers, 31, said.

"That kind of prejudicial ideology puts us in the position we're in today."

Speaking at the post-match news conference, Rodgers refused to say exactly what he had heard, but the Washington Post reported that the comment was a "derogatory generalisation about Muslims".

Rodgers' intervention was widely praised on social media.
