"Today's media conference was a serious, sombre occasion with both France's captain and manager addressing the magnitude of the occasion.

"As Didier Deschamps described it, this match is a 'duty'. Hugo Lloris meanwhile spoke of a 'moment of solidarity' between France and England. It's clear that the decision to go ahead with this game was made by the Federation and the players are doing their best to get in the right frame of mind to actually perform. But as Deschamps said, this match now has a significance to the French nation far beyond French football."

McNamara future yet to be decidedpublished at 18:27

    Rugby League

The Rugby Football League will take its time over the possible re-appointment of Steve McNamara as England coach, with a decision not expected until the New Year at the earliest.

The 44-year-old former Bradford boss' tenure came after leading England to a series-clinching win over New Zealand on Saturday. He will now return to the Sydney Roosters, where he works full-time as an assistant coach.

RFL chief executive Nigel Wood said: "We will sit down with Steve at an appropriate time in the coming months to discuss the progress of the England programme and the national team and to talk about the future."

London mayor Boris Johnson, who will attend the England-France friendly on Tuesday night said it was "absolutely right" for the match to go ahead, in spite of the attacks in Paris.

"The horrific atrocities perpetrated in Paris on Friday were an attack on our very way of life, our freedom, our democracy," he said. "Of course we can never be complacent, and tomorrow's game will be policed appropriately, but I can't think of a better riposte to this ideology of hate than to carry on with our lives, our loves and our passions."

Connacht are still enduring a difficult journey back from Russia almost two days after their Challenge Cup game against Enisei-STM ended.

The Irish province beat the Siberian team 31-14 but then saw their chartered flight home cancelled after the plane developed a technical problem.

Following a total of two extra nights in Krasnoyarsk, the team made it as far as Moscow earlier today before splitting into groups with some going on to London while others may be forced to stay the night in Amsterdam.

IBF super-bantamweight champion Frampton warned WBA title holder Quigg he would be booed in his home town of Manchester thanks to the legion of fans supporting the Northern Irish fighter.

"I’m positive I’m going to have more fans in the arena than Scott will have – I’m not trying to put the lad down but he doesn’t sell tickets," said Frampton.

"I don’t know what it’s going to be like for him standing in Manchester on the ramp as a home fighter and getting booed or a worse reception than me."

Quigg responded: "Me being booed? No chance. It’s a fight that I know I’m better than him in every department."

Elsewhere, Scott Quigg and Carl Frampton have given a feisty news conference ahead of their super-bantamweight world title unification match.

The bout takes place in Manchester on 27 February, with each fighter already taking a different approach to the build up.

Quigg said: "Signing the contract was my Christmas – I won’t be celebrating Christmas this year, I’ll be in the gym fully focused on 27 February and I 100% believe I’ll win that fight on the night."

Frampton replied: "Although Scott won’t be enjoying Christmas I will be, I’ve got a couple of kids to enjoy it with. I'll have Christmas dinner, take it nice and easy as we’re still two months away from the fight."

France manager Didier Deschamps: "We have two players who have been profoundly touched by the incidents. Antoine Griezmann was fortunate to have a feeling of relief and happiness, that his sister managed to stay alive despite being at the Bataclan. As for Lassana Diarra, his life has been touched by the deep loss of a relative who he was close to. It was good he stayed with us, I have conversed with him, as all of us have, and his place has been a source of reassurance for us. We have learnt the value of unity and solidarity. I can only repeat the message Lassana has delivered on social media."

France manager Didier Deschamps: "Throughout my career as a coach, football has always had an important function in everyday life. Globally, it has a strong role in society. Sport and football is a way of life in many nations. It is a strong symbol and players can give a great example and be role models on how to behave. The key, to my eye, is that we have the chance to represent those beautiful colours of blue, white and red and we will do that with pride."

France manager Didier Deschamps: "Sport in general and in particular football, which is the most popular worldwide, has always been a symbol and represents important values. After these events, these values are even more important. Those present on the field of sport tomorrow night have a duty of representing and symbolising the values of sport."

Everyone has their own way of dealing with it, but it's important tomorrow night that we are representing our country. This has never been taken lightly by this group of players and the meaning of wearing the shirt has never been forgotten in the past."

Each player and individual has dealt with this in their own way. The main thing is that we have kept together and shared our grief. We have tried to focus on our work. The time has come to focus on the game and approach it with the dignity and sobriety that the situation deserves."

France manager Didier Deschamps: "It is the very first time a stadium, football players and supporters have been a target for a terrorist attack. But sport has a way of uniting people, sport is the very representation of economic and social life; everyday life.

"I have always said that it is a huge source of pride for me to represent my country in sport and that has become even more important now. Sport represents a union of diversity and diversity coming together. Lassana Diarra's message put it well; sport has no colour, sport has no religion."

France manager Didier Deschamps is asked if he has "a message for the terrorists": "It's difficult to respond, we are here as a staff and management and players, it's hard to make a comment when there have been such atrocities.

"As a group we are thinking of the victims and their families and friends, but to be honest I don't want to talk too much on subjects not about the sport. We are representing our country in a particularly poignant moment.

"I am really grateful for the messages of solidarity and support all over the world, but especially from the English because we are to play the match [here]. The match will be full of emotion but we have a duty to perform and give a good account of ourselves and represent our country in the right way."

"When it became clear that Germany wanted to remain in the stadium, independent of what we were recommended to do by the security services, I approached Joachim Low and we said we would remain with them until the right solution was arrived at. We did not get back to Clairefontaine until the late hours. It was difficult to eat or sleep."
