Who are the British players in the NFL?

  • Published

There are five British players with NFL teams heading into the 2025 season.

Three of them - Graham Gano, Jamie Gillan and Jermaine Eluemunor - are with the New York Giants.

Gano is a kicker, Gillan is a punter and Eluemunor is a guard/tackle.

Julian Okwara, who plays for the Cleveland Browns, is a linebacker, with Baltimore Ravens offensive linebacker David Ojabo completing the list.

Efe Obada, who has spent the past 10 seasons in the NFL, is currently without a team after leaving the Washington Commanders.

Travis Clayton and Mapalo Mwansa are not on active NFL rosters at present, but are on the practice squads of the Buffalo Bills and Carolina Panthers respectively.

Another Briton, Aden Durde, is the defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks.

Former Wales rugby union star Louis Rees-Zammit spent last season on the practice squads of the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, but he opted to call time on hopes of an NFL career in July this year.

Rees-Zammit made three pre-season appearances for the Chiefs but did not play in an official match.

There are four Irish players with NFL teams, although three of those are on practice squads.

Two of them play for the Green Bay Packers - punter Daniel Whelan and kicker Mark McNamee. McNamee, who featured in pre-season, is part of their practice squad.

As well as the three Britons playing for the Giants, Irish place-kicker Jude McAtamney is also part of their practice squad.

Completing the list of Irish players in the NFL at present is Charlie Smyth, a place-kicker for the New Orleans Saints. Like McNamee and McAtamney, Smyth has also been placed on his side's practice squad.

Players on the practice squad can be called up to a team's 53-man active roster at any time in the season, as McAtamney was briefly last year.
