Carlisle United have appointed Martin Foyle as the club's head of recruitment as they plan for life in the National League.

Foyle, 62, who has managed Port Vale in the EFL, arrives at Carlisle having been head of recruitment at Scottish Premiership side St Mirren, a role he also held at Motherwell, Morecambe and Northampton Town.

This follows the appointment of Marc Tierney as head of football operations, Mark Hughes staying on as manager, and Paul Hart joining the club's board in an advisory capacity.

"Martin has a proven track record of unearthing players who punch above their weight," Carlisle's chairman Tom Piatak said, external.

"His experience, contacts, and instincts will be vital as we reshape the squad with ambition and purpose."

Carlisle will play in the National League for the first time in 20 years following successive relegations.

But bringing in Foyle, who has managed over 400 games with Port Vale, York City and Hereford United is another part of the rebuild after the club undertook a post-season review into what had gone wrong.

Of Foyle, Piatak added: "We're thrilled to bring in someone who knows how to identify value in the market and help build winning teams."

The club's review stated that recruitment "had not met expectations" during the three previous transfer windows.

Those issues have been addressed with sporting director Rob Clarkson leaving the club and Tierney moving from fellow National League side Altrincham to take up his new position.
