Antrim International Cross Country: Steph Twell second in NI event

Former winner Steph Twell, external had to settle for second place behind Ethiopia's Birtukan Fente Alemu at the IAAF Antrim International Cross Country event.

Alemu, whose regular track event is the 3,000m steeplechase, denied 2009 winner Twell, 25, with another Ethiopian Birtukan Adamu taking third place.

Scottish athlete Twell finished 16 seconds behind Alemu who won in 24 minutes and 12 seconds.

Ugandan Thomas Ayeko repeated his 2013 men's win on the Greenmount course.

Ayeko finished 13 seconds ahead of Kenya's 2008 Olympic 5,000m bronze medallist Edwin Soi with another Kenyan Jonathan Ndiku in third.

The first three quickly opened up a large gap on the remainder of the field before Ayeko surged clear on the final lap as he took victory in 31 minutes and 27 seconds.

Liam Brady was the first Irish men's finisher in 14th place with Declan Reed the leading Northern Ireland man in 19th place.
