Ian: That was the most exciting race walk ever. The look on Garcia-Caro's face as she was passed on the finish line. Incredible.

These are the pictures which will haunt Spain's Laura Garcia-Caro, who was pipped to bronze by Ukraine's Lyudmyla Olyanovska as she began to celebrate only a couple of metres before the finish line.

    That is going to hurt.

    Men's shot put

Scott Lincoln's second throw is a marginal improvement, up to 20.31m.

Still shy of the automatic qualification mark of 20.70m, but he's up to sixth in the overall rankings so is very well placed for a final spot regardless.

All credit to Antonella Palmisano and Valentina Trapletti in silver.

Palmisano took the lead just after the 3km stage. In the early stages Clemence Beretta - who finished seventh - did challenge Palmisano, but then she struggled over the last few kilometres.

Palmisano got quicker and quicker. She threw in the 4.18 kilometre and that finished everybody.

    Men's shot put

A good start by Britain's Scott Lincoln, with an opening throw of 19.97m.

That puts him seventh and into the final, as it stands.

    Men's shot put

If any of the athletes throw 20.70 metres in this shot put qualifier, they automatically go through to the final.

That means European leader and gold favourite Leonardo Fabbri is already qualified. A quick and easy evening's work.

The distraught look on Laura Garcia-Caro face, she cannot believe it!

Two metres from the line Garcia-Caro had her hands up in the air expecting to be on the podium. She only realised with one stride to the line that Lyudmila Olyanovska was coming and she overhauled her!

The replays are not kind to Laura Garcia-Caro. She has a huge smile as she enters the final straight and is punching the air just as Lyudmila Olyanovska goes past her.

The look of absolute horror as she glances to her right and sees Olyanovska coming past to snatch bronze. Every athlete's worst nightmare.

    Men's shot put

A great start by European leader Leonardo Fabbri, who will be aiming to follow Antonella Palmisano in delivering home gold for Italy.

His first throw is 21.10m and sets him top of the early standings. An excellent benchmark.

Italy have had a one-two in the women's walk before, but that was in 1998 with Annarita Sidotita finishing first and Erica Alfridi finishing second.

How fabulous that the home nation takes the first gold of this European championships!

Extraordinary scenes in the race walk! Spain's Laura Garcia-Caro seemed certain to finish third, and was handed a Spanish flag on the home straight.

But as she was celebrating before crossing the line, Ukraine's Lyudmila Olyanovska stormed up behind her and pipped Garcia-Caro on the line.

Heartbreak for Garcia-Caro, who collapses to the track in a mix of devastation and embarrassment.

We have our first gold of the championships - and it goes to the host nation.

Olympic champion Antonella Palmisano of Italy has smoked the field and comes home as a clear and very popular winner.

The 32-year-old, with a decorative woollen flower in the colours of the Italian flag in her hair, is roared home into the stadium by the delighted home crowd. Sparse in numbers, they still make a great noise.

Your random fact for the evening - British heptathlete Jade O'Dowda is the sister of Cardiff City winger Callum O'Dowda.

Callum also represents Republic of Ireland in international football, through their grandfather. The siblings were born in Oxford, with Jade choosing to compete for her birth nation.

Reflecting on the women's heptathlon after the shot put earlier - the third of seven events in the competition - there is a lot of work for Katarina Johnson-Thompson to do to get herself back into the podium picture.

The world champion is now more than 300 points behind leader Nafi Thiam, who is making a bit of a statement before their anticipated gold medal showdown at Paris 2024.

With the shot put among Johnson-Thompson's weaker disciplines, the leading Briton after three events is Jade O'Dowda.

O'Dowda, a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist in 2022, set a personal best 6255 points in Gotzis last year. On that day, she had 2716 points after three events - 36 fewer than the 2752 she currently has in Rome.

The 24-year-old is off to a great start and sits within 140 points of the medal places.
