    It’s the first time we have seen the European Athletics Championships so close to an Olympic Games.

    For many of these athletes they are trying to secure a place in the Olympics with a qualifying time or proving fitness.

    It's a really interesting European Athletics Championships.

    The European Athletics Championships will conclude on Wednesday, 12 June with the athletics events at the Olympics beginning on Thursday, 1 August.

    Thiam, who is the world indoor champion, is in a good position.

    Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Nafissatou Thiam have yet to do a heptathlon this year so it is really interesting. I guess whoever wins will say it is very significant and whoever doesn’t win will say it is to be built on.

    Thiam is still to gain her Olympic qualifying spot. She needs 6,400 points, but we fully expect her to get that.

    Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Jade O'Dowda are the British interests, currently fourth and sixth in the overall standings.

    The first field final of the championships will start at 20.00 BST this evening in the men's discus - and Great Britain has a medal hope.

    Lawrence Okoye finished fourth in his heat with a throw of 63.62 metres and sixth overall, leaving him comfortably among the top 12 athletes who qualified for the final.

    Okoye's peripatetic career has involved a place in the London 2012 final and a stint in NFL, but he has a chance of a first major career medal tonight.

  11. Watch: Reekie finishes first in 1500m heatpublished at 17:36 British Summer Time 7 June

    Jemma Reekie, who won silver in front of her home Glasgow crowd at the World Indoor Championships earlier this year, is eyeing another medal this weekend.

    She won her heat in the women's 1500m this morning, and is through to Sunday night's final.

    She progresses along with compatriots Georgia Bell (4:12.01) and Katie Snowden (4:12.17), who were second and third respectively in their heat.

    The first medals at these championships will be awarded in the women's 20km race walk, which starts at 17.35 BST.

    It's an open field, with European leader this season, Elvira Chepareva, not competing due to Russian athletes being banned from these championships.

    There's no British interest in the race, but we will bring you the results once we have them.

    Unfortunately for her, Belgian rival Nafi Thiam also brought her best to extend her lead over both the Brit and the rest of the pack.

    Katarina Johnson-Thompson is against the reigning champion Nafissatou Thiam and it’s the elusive medal that Johnson-Thompson wants.

    Johnson-Thompson has been world champion, she has pretty much won everything except the European title and that is one of the reasons she is here.

    Great Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson trails leader Nafissatou Thiam by 143 points after the first two events of the heptathlon this morning.

    World champion Johnson-Thompson ran 13.66 seconds in opening event the 100m hurdles and finished seventh in her heat.

    The 31-year-old then registered the joint-second best of 1.83m in the high jump, along with compatriot Jade O’Dowda.

    Olympic champion Thiam leads the heptathlon after running 13.74s in the 100m hurdles and then leapfrogging to the top of the standings with an impressive 1.95m in the high jump.

    KJT is fourth in the overall standings, while O'Dowda is sixth.

    The shot put and 200m take place in the evening session on Friday, with the long jump, javelin and 800m being held on Saturday.
