Hillsborough: FA chairman David Bernstein gives apology

The Football Association issues an apology through chairman David Bernstein for its role in the Hillsborough disaster in which 96 Liverpool fans died on overcrowded terraces.

Hillsborough was selected as the venue for the 1989 FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, despite the lack of a valid safety certificate for the stadium.

"I offer a full and unreserved apology and express sincere condolences to all of the families of those who lost their lives and to everyone connected to the city of Liverpool and Liverpool Football Club," said Bernstein.

It follows Wednesday's independent report into the disaster which found that some of the dead might have been saved, and said police had changed witness statements and tried to blame Liverpool fans.
