Man United v Real Madrid: Sir Alex Ferguson 'distraught' after Nani red card

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is "too distraught" to face the press, according to his assistant Mike Phelan, after United are knocked out of the Champions League in the last 16 by Real Madrid.

The 2-1 defeat on the night (3-2 on aggregate) came in controversial circumstances, as United midfielder Nani was sent off for an aerial challenge on Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa after 56 minutes, with United leading 1-0 - a decision that Phelan describes as "amazing".

Sergio Ramos deflected Nani's cross into his own net to give United the lead just after half-time but Real took advantage of the home side being reduced to 10 men, with two goals in three minutes from ex-Tottenham midfield man Luka Modric and former United player Cristiano Ronaldo to move into the last eight.
