Gary Lineker's hat-trick against Poland helped him win the coveted Golden Boot in 1986, but England were knocked out by Argentina, in a match during which Diego Maradona scored his infamous 'Hand of God' goal.
England reached the semi-finals in Italy in 1990, but lost on penalties to West Germany. They also exited France 98 on spot-kicks, but not before an 18-year-old Michael Owen netted a superb solo goal against Argentina.
