Man Utd 2-1 West Ham: Louis van Gaal praises defender debutants
Louis van Gaal praises defenders Luke Shaw and Paddy McNair following Manchester United beat West Ham 2-1 at Old Trafford.
A defensive crisis forced the Dutchman to start with 19-year-old McNair in central defence and £27m summer signing Luke Shaw at left-back as both made their club debuts.
Speaking to BBC Sport's Gary Lineker on Match of the Day, the Man Utd manager also admitted captain Wayne Rooney could have no complaints about his red card for a "professional foul" on Stewart Downing.
Rooney had earlier opened the scoring at Old Trafford to become the outright third-top scorer in Premier League history with 175 goals, behind only Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole.
