Sunderland 'overpaid' for players - Dick Advocaat

Sunderland head coach Dick Advocaat criticises the club previous recruitment policy, saying it "overpaid" on fees and wages for players who were not up to scratch.

The Dutchman says he can understand chairman Ellis Short's reluctance to spend in this window, after eyebrow-raising sums have been spent on players who have condemned the club to fighting a relegation battle season after season.

However, Advocaat says he is trying to change the club's approach and believes the signings he has made have been "very good business".
