Ryder Cup: Rory McIlroy backs Paul McGinley for captain

World number one Rory McIlroy says he will be "disappointed" if Paul McGinley is not named Europe's 2014 Ryder Cup captain.

McIlroy feels the "influential" McGinley deserves the opportunity to be captain because the Dubliner will approach the tournament in the "right way" and is full of "great ideas".

The likes of Ian Poulter, Luke Donald and Justin Rose have also called for McGinley's appointment and McIlroy hopes the European Tour's tournament committee will take their opinions on board.
