Ryan Farquhar says he is 'lucky to be alive' after North West 200 crash

Motorcycle road racer Ryan Farquhar says he is "lucky to be alive" after suffering serious injuries in a crash at the North West 200 on 12 May.

The 40-year-old sustained a lacerated liver, six broken ribs, a punctured lung and two broken bones in his foot in the accident which occurred on the approach to the Black Hill section of the course during Thursday evening's Supertwins race.

Lancashire rider Malachi Mitchell-Thomas, 20, lost his life after crashing on the same part of the course in the second Supertwins race of the meeting two days later.

"It was so sad that a young lad that age has lost his life to a sport he loved doing," said Farquhar, who added that he was "absolutely gutted" when he heard the news.

The five-times North West winner said that it was too early to make any decisions about his future in the sport.

"I'll always love road racing but the last thing on my mind is getting fit to race. The first priority is to get my health sorted out, spend time with my family and then sort the whole racing situation then."
