Michael Phelps, multiple gold medallist in both Athens and Beijing, can only manage a third-place finish in the 200m Butterfly heats, coming behind his American team-mate Tyler Clary and the Austrian Dinko Jukic.

Phelps was also part of the American men's 4x100m freestyle relay team that missed out on gold on Sunday, after Yannick Agnel of France produced an incredible final 100m.

The 200m butterfly semi-final is on Monday evening.
