Middleweight boxer Anthony Ogogo says he is doing Strictly Come Dancing this year because he is unable to box until December with a shoulder injury.

The 26-year-old 2012 Olympic bronze medallist was the ninth celebrity to be announced as a contestant for the BBC One show on Friday.

Ogogo underwent surgery after dislocating his shoulder in his most recent fight against Ruslan Schelev.

"Punching for 16 weeks is impossible," Ogogo said on Twitter., external

"So this amazing opportunity has presented itself whilst I'm recovering from my shoulder operation.

"My choices were sulk (and) sit on my backside whilst rehabbing my shoulder or whilst I'm unable to box make the most of this amazing opportunity."

Lowestoft-born Ogogo is unbeaten in his eight fights as a professional boxer, but had not fought for 12 months before his bout with Schelev because of an Achilles problem.

He follows in the footsteps of fellow boxers Audley Harrison and Joe Calzaghe in competing in Strictly, while 11-time world champion Floyd Mayweather took part in the US version of the show in 2007.

"Floyd Mayweather did the US version of Strictly whilst training for his fight against (Ricky) Hatton, he's gone on to be an international star," Ogogo added.
