Glasgow 2014: Dan Purvis targets gymnastics medal

Dan Purvis hopes the home crowd will help boost chances of some Team Scotland medals in gymnastics at next year's Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

The Olympic bronze medallist is competing in the Glasgow World Cup at the Emirates Arena and expects a warm reception.

"I think about going to Glasgow and I want to put in a good performance and show everyone what I can do," he said.

"The crowd get behind you and you want to put on a good show for them."

Purvis, 23, won gold at the World Cup in Glasgow in 2011 but had to settle for bronze at last year's event before his success at the London 2012 Olympics.

However, he is hopeful that this year's competition will be good preparation for next year's Commonwealth Games across the city.

"The Olympics was really great for the sport," said Purvis. "When we got the bronze medal, it was great that everyone appreciated it.

"But to be back here competing the third time for me at this World Cup event, it's great every time.

"The atmosphere is great, the crowd get behind us - it's important that you have that.

"It's good experience for the Commonwealth Games coming up and I think, since the Olympics, gymnastics have really taken off, so I'm hoping the Commonwealth Games will be just as good an atmosphere.

"It'll be great for Scotland to get a team medal - it'll be entirely possible - it's looking good for that."

Gymnastics will take place at the Glasgow Hydro Arena during the 2014 games and Purvis, born in Liverpool but whose mother hails from Dundee, is already setting his sights on the Rio Olympics in 2016.

"The Commonwealth Games is my next target for me," he said. "It would be great to get a couple of medals there and even establish a good all-round spot.

"After that, I'll see how I'm getting on for Rio, but it's one step at a time."
